FC Barcelona’s search for offensive reinforcements has hit another snag. After the collapse of the Nico Williams deal from Athletic Club, the club’s focus shifted to finding a new left winger, with Luis Díaz of Liverpool remaining the top priority. However, his high price tag and competition from Bayern are complicating matters.
Rashford Opts for Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe
As a backup plan, Barça had been monitoring Marcus Rashford from Manchester United. The English winger was considered the most accessible offensive option, as he had lost his place under new manager Ruben Amorim and could have been available on a loan with an option to buy. Rashford had reportedly even desired a move to Barcelona and was willing to take a pay cut to make the transfer happen.
Although financially a cheaper solution than Luis Díaz, Rashford didn’t fully convince Barcelona’s sporting management due to his inconsistent performance in recent years. However, during his six-month loan spell at Aston Villa, he managed 4 goals and 6 assists in 17 games, showing glimpses of his old form.
Now, a new report significantly complicates Barcelona’s plans. According to Fotomac and other Turkish sources, Rashford has given the green light to a move to Fenerbahçe, lured by José Mourinho. Mourinho reportedly called Rashford personally to convince him of the Fenerbahçe project. The pair share a very close relationship from Mourinho’s time at Old Trafford, where the Portuguese coach gave Rashford his first big senior opportunity. Rashford reportedly still considers Mourinho a football mentor or even a father figure.
Fenerbahçe plans a loan-with-option-to-buy deal, which would suit all parties. Devin Ozek, the Turkish club’s sporting director, is reportedly flying to England this weekend to finalize negotiations with Manchester United and Rashford’s representatives.
Barcelona’s Shrinking Options
This news is a major blow for Barcelona. Rashford was their Plan B if a deal for Luis Díaz proved too costly. Liverpool is demanding a high transfer fee for the Colombian, making Rashford’s potential loan seem like a sensible alternative.
If the transfer to Fenerbahçe is finalized, Barcelona will be forced to look for other names. Players like Rafael Leão and Ademola Lookman remain on the list, but neither of these options will be cheap or straightforward.
If Barcelona wants to strengthen its attack, time in the market is running out – and options are quickly diminishing.
