Leon Goretzka could become one of the most interesting free agents of the summer, with FC Barcelona closely monitoring his situation. The German midfielder’s contract with Bayern Munich expires at the end of June, and a reunion with Hansi Flick is once again being discussed.
Reports late last year suggested that Goretzka would be open to working with Flick again. Now, those rumors have gained credibility after Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed that the midfielder is expected to leave the club at the end of the season.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Goretzka will not depart in January but will instead complete the campaign in Munich before moving on in the summer.
“Leon’s time at Bayern Munich will come to an end in the summer. After eight successful years, he will take a different path. In the coming months, we will continue fighting together for big objectives,” Freund said.
Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg adds that Goretzka has already decided to reject an offer from Atlético Madrid and remain at Bayern until his contract expires.
“The player’s goal is to finish the season successfully and then start a new chapter,” Plettenberg reports.
Barcelona are among the clubs interested, alongside Atlético Madrid and AC Milan. The Catalan club has followed Goretzka for several years and was already linked with him back in 2021. Signing the experienced midfielder on a free transfer would be financially attractive, especially given Barcelona’s ongoing budget constraints.
The key question remains Hansi Flick’s stance on the move. The German coach knows Goretzka extremely well from their time together at Bayern, where the midfielder played an important role during one of the club’s most successful periods. Whether Flick sees him as a tactical fit for Barcelona’s midfield will likely determine how far the interest develops.
Goretzka’s next destination will be decided during the summer transfer window, but Barcelona remain firmly in the conversation.
