Marc-André ter Stegen isn’t planning to leave FC Barcelona this summer, despite clear signals from the club that he’s no longer their top choice in goal. The German keeper intends to stay until at least January and battle for his spot under Hansi Flick.
Spanish sources indicate a meeting between Ter Stegen, Flick, and Sporting Director Deco is expected as early as Sunday or Monday to discuss his situation. Barcelona will reportedly inform him he won’t be in the squad unless Joan García or Wojciech Szczęsny are injured or suspended. But this hasn’t deterred the German. While several clubs are interested, Ter Stegen refuses a transfer or contract termination without full payment of its value.
The Barcelona goalkeeper, returning from vacation, will undergo medical tests Sunday and join the team as the official captain. His message is clear: “I want to stay and fight for the number one spot.” With three years left on his contract, he has no intention of giving it up easily.
Frustration with Leaks, Confidence in His Quality
Ter Stegen believes things would be different if the club had been transparent from the start. He’s particularly annoyed by information leaks from within Barcelona, which he feels painted him as a dressing room problem. He suspects this was a tactic to pressure him into leaving. However, he refuses to back down and is determined to defend his interests until the very last moment.
Ter Stegen feels excellent physically and is convinced his quality surpasses his current competitors. He believes if it were solely about performance, he’d reclaim the starting role. He thinks there’s still a chance for a comeback and that time is on his side.
However, Barcelona plans to offer him a free exit or a loan, as their main goal is to save his high salary and free up wage cap space. Ter Stegen, though, insists on being paid his entire remaining contract if he leaves, citing Nikola Mirotić’s case where the basketball player received his full payout.
World Cup Ambitions and Future Options
If no resolution is found, Ter Stegen plans to stay until at least January. This is a crucial deadline for him, as he needs regular playing time to ensure his spot in the 2026 World Cup. He believes he can still turn the situation around at Barcelona. But if it becomes clear Flick only sees Joan García as the starter, the German might consider a winter loan or transfer – ideally to a club where he’d get consistent minutes under Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Offers Rejected
Galatasaray and Monaco have shown interest, but Ter Stegen hasn’t even engaged in talks with them. Inter Milan and Manchester United are still looking for a goalkeeper, so a late opportunity could emerge. However, the German keeper currently won’t entertain any talk of leaving. This could pose a significant problem for Barcelona.
